UN Office on Outer Space Affairs and International Civil Aviation Organization - Joint Plenary

The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs was created by the UN Secretariat to work with AD-HOC on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, and was established by the General Assembly on December 13 1958. UNOOSA was created in order to “promote international cooperation in the peaceful use and exploration  of space, and in the utilization of space science and technology for sustainable economic and social development.” The committee allowed for UN Member States to establish frameworks to govern the activities in space. This also allows for developing countries to use space science technology for national development.

The International Civil Aviation Organization was established by member states in 1944. This organization was established to manage the governance of the Convention of International Civil Aviation. ICAO works with 191 member states to work on policies to support “a safe, efficient, secure, economically sustainable and environmentally responsible civil aviation sector.” By doing this, ICAO Member States ensure that the global network of aviation operates safely and reliably all around the globe.

The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs and International Civil Aviation Organization will be focusing on three topics for this conference:

  1. Global Aviation Security

  2. Long-Term Sustainability of Outer Space Activities

  3. Exploitation and Colonization of Celestial Bodies
